Back in December I found some lovely sea-green (my colour of 2011-12) yarn in a charity shop. There were about 6 balls which the eccentric manager priced at the grand sum of £1.80 – I had to buy them! Though I loved the colour, there just wasn’t enough yarn for even a short-sleeved jumper from A Stitch in Time; the obvious solution then was to do something involving another yarn. The best solution I could think of regarding the yardage available was to make another ‘Enchanting’ jumper.
I decided not to knit the yoke in Kidsilk Haze this time as the thin silk core of the yarn has not held up terribly well to frequent use of the jumper (‘Enchanting in grey and pink’ is definitely one of my most-worn knits). Instead, I chose a heavenly soft Alpaca 4-ply yarn in rose pink.
The colour combination when knitted up somehow looks a bit more startling than when I held the balls of yarn together originally. Hopefully I can work out a way to wear it without looking too garish.
This project is coming along pretty quickly as it is such a good commuting/travelling knit: simple and repetitive so that it can be quickly packed up when you realise it’s your tube stop without running the risk of spoiling a stitch pattern. Soothing and enjoyable to while away long journeys, and with a bit of interest for dull moments.
Do you have a favourite type of project for car or train journeys?

The best travelling project to me is socks!
Ah yes socks are always a good one! I haven’t knit them in ages (mostly because I can’t seem to wear my knitted socks with actual shoes…)
what a find! I don’t think many people realise how much good quality yarn actually costs. I have been looking into getting a spinning wheel but the modern ones are way out of my price range so it’s car boot sales and ebay for a little while longer. That green is a lovely colour, I imagine it would suit you well. I love to crochet on the morning train, it’s nice and compact.
I know – it’s hideous how much it all adds up to! Using lightweight yarns (4-ply and lighter) is proving more economical to my budget though, even when buying first-hand from shops! I am really impressed by anyone that can spin though, what an ambition!
